Radio Economics|Clean-Coal Technology and Policy Issues in the U.S. Episode
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 03, 2006: Speakers (in order or appearance): Professor Klaus Lackner, Director, Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy, Columbia University; Brian Schweitzer, Governor of Montana; Joe Manchin III, Governor of West Virginia;.The United States today faces an urgent energy challenge: to identify reliable, abundant sources of energy that minimize emissions of greenhouse gases. Coal will play a major role in meeting energy demand in the 21st century. In order to sustainably harness the energy potential of coal, the U.S. must develop technologies that minimize carbon dioxide emissions and build the infrastructure to safely sequester carbon dioxide beneath the ground.Klaus Lackner, the director of the Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy, Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer and West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin held a press briefing on October 12, 2006 to answer questions on clean-coal technology and related policy issues. Montana and West Virginia rank among the most important coal-producing states in the country, and are leading the way in promoting safe, clean energy alternatives. Some of the topics they addressed included: Prospects for deploying a carbon capture and storage infrastructure; How state-level policies can best encourage advanced; clean-coal technologies; How university coal research programs can inform the policy process; Challenges facing carbon capture and storage; Long-term impacts of advanced clean-coal technology.
