IndiePodcasting.com|Jessie Murphy - "Room Alone" Episode
Jessie Murphy was born and raised in New York City and her original songs and style have made her a favorite performer in her hometown and in New York's legendary Antifolk scene. "There's a cargo hold of humanity in the beautiful Jessie Murphy's songs," read last Summer's Antifolk Fest program, "She packs houses, she wows crowds, she's one to watch." Jessie is also a frequent Village Voice choice. The paper once described singer-songwriter Jessie Murphy as sounding like both a "photonegative of Jimi Hendrix" and "Joni Mitchell's scrappy kid sister with a voice like rippling silk."
Murphy grew up listening to Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Al Green, Simon and Garfunkel and Sarah Vaughn. In recent years she's also been influenced by artists like Belle and Sebastian, Fiest, The Kings of Convenience and Regina Spektor. Foremost a guitarist, she spent a year developing her guitar work and performance style at the Berkley School of Music in Boston. Murphy graduated from Columbia University with a combined degree in English and Creative Writing. Upon graduation, she embarked on a professional career in music, teaching private guitar lessons while continuing to study music independently.
