KCPW Newsroom|Beyond Brothels Episode

As a 9-year-old boy, Avijit Halder was living in Calcutta's red light district with his impoverished mother. An American photographer took him and his friends under her wing, gave them cameras and taught them to capture their lives on film. Their story became the 2005 Oscar-winning documentary Born Into Brothels. The film changed Avijit's life. He has since moved to America to study. Now he is in Salt Lake City taking a filmmaking course at SpyHop and preparing for his junior year at Rowland Hall St. Marks. KCPW's Julie Rose spoke with the 17-year-old about his new life beyond the brothels:Listen to audio.
