It has been exactly 11 weeks since the oil spill from the well head of the West Atlas drilling platform began, 200 km off the Kimberley coast. The environment movement is calling it one of Australia's worst environmental disasters, that will continue to unfold for years to come. The oil and gas industry says it should never have happened. And Indonesian fishermen are complaining their income and fish catch has been hit hard. The immediate crisis is over, but the accident will long haunt the Australian oil and gas industry, and many difficult questions remain unanswered. The Federal Government yesterday announced a Commission of Inquiry into the disaster with the powers of a Royal Commission. It has six months to report.
