Homeschool Habitat|Homeschool Habitat 10 Episode

July 9, 2005. First we welcome our new listeners and explain our show format. Parentside: A brief discussion of a St. Petersburg Times article about a non-inclusive homeschooling website. Visit www.uuhomschool.org for a list on homeschooling groups across the country that are open and inviting to all people. We ask the question,"What is the goal of your families'home education? In what way does that effect your homeschooling style, if any?"Then we read people's responses, plus a special audio comment. For this week's homeschooling philosophy we discuss"A Thomas Jefferson Education,"written by Dr. Oliver De Mille. We share some of Harvard's, Princeton's and Wythe College's skills lists for securing work you love. Kidside: We talk about inventor Elias Howe and then we review the book"Ida B."by Katherine Hannigan. In the context of this novel we discuss the meaning of main character, setting, plot and theme. Then we share some games for the car before moving on to our science topic for the month; astronomy. We define astronomy, share a mnemonic device for remembering the order of our solar system's planets. We discuss making a scale model of the solar system and some of the daily routines of an astronaut in space. (Running Time 42:33)
