Content2: Today we are talking about distros first choose how you are going to use the distro Desktop or Server Desktops can be big machines, or laptops Requirements for Desktop: User-friendly good hardware detection good package management if you are on a laptop, you want amazing hardware detection Thsese are newbie distros I am going over Ubuntu, Mandriva, Fedora Core 5, Suse 10.1 Ubuntu Pros: Very easy to use Good Support wonderful package management Cons: uses Gnome by default no root user must use Sudo -S not 100% command line free Fedora Core 5 Pros: Huge support base Generally fast Cons: Updater is very slow little behind in software updates requires command line work Mandriva Pros: recommended for laptops super easy no command line centralized control panel Cons: not very configurable not best package manager not biggest support base Suse Pros: Easy to use YaST widely used package manager Cons: requires some command line work not too fast Once you get past newbie distros you might want to try slackware or ArchLinux these are distros that require a lot of command line and configuring work For servers I only looked at one distro CentOS IT is the open-source version of red-hat enterprise fast, lets of terminal work Doesn't make being an admin too easy.
