Look at history of RootSmart.com
Started the site in December of 04
had my first video on firefox extensions
I was using a socom U.S. Navy Seals headset
When I recorded it was super low volume
This is boosted by over 400%
So I did that for a while, and then on this day, last year I started the podcast
I was using my friends mic and yamaha mixer
here is what that sounded like
Then I re-did the site, got new equipment
this was my first interview
much lower quality, compared to my current interviews
so that is my basic way of how I got started
any new podcasters, have any getting started questions?

Today we are talking about distros
first choose how you are going to use the distro
Desktop or Server
Desktops can be big machines, or laptops
Requirements for Desktop:
User-friendly
good hardware detection
good package management
if you are on a laptop, you want amazing hardware detection
Thsese are newbie distros
I am going over Ubuntu, Mandriva, Fedora Core 5, Suse 10.1
Ubuntu
Pros:
Very easy to use
Good Support
wonderful package management
Cons:
uses Gnome by default
no root user
must use Sudo -S
not 100% command line free
Fedora Core 5
Pros:
Huge support base
Generally fast
Cons:
Updater is very slow
little behind in software updates
requires command line work
Mandriva
Pros:
recommended for laptops
super easy
no command line
centralized control panel
Cons:
not very configurable
not best package manager
not biggest support base
Suse
Pros:
Easy to use
YaST
widely used package manager
Cons:
requires some command line work
not too fast
Once you get past newbie distros you might want to try slackware or ArchLinux
these are distros that require a lot of command line and configuring work
For servers I only looked at one distro
CentOS
IT is the open-source version of red-hat enterprise
fast, lets of terminal work
Doesn't make being an admin too easy.
