New Thought Ministries of Oregon|A Closer Walk with Thee Episode
A Closer Walk with Thee March 15, 2009Rev. David AlexanderFocus for the year: Courting the Divine in 2009: A Year of Spiritual LiberationToday is the seventh week of the Season for Nonviolence, a 64 day period of time, beginning with the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s death on January 30 and ending with the anniversary of Martin Luther Kings, Jr’s assassination date of April 4. It is a time to focus on peace in our personal and collective lives. We are also in Lent, the forty days before Easter. Lent is a Christian idea that can be interpreted as a time to go deeper, a complete season or foundation, the period of time to create a new habit. For those following the New Thought path, it is a time to fast from the idea that anyone stands in the way of God’s good for us. When we withdraw our attention from false or unworthy thoughts about ourselves and feast in spirit, we therefore move into true prayer and can respond to God’s will for us. It is a process of reconciliation and cleansing—a time to come into alignment with who and what we are.We can ask ourselves what needs cleaning out so that we can walk in the world without fear, doubt and distractions. Ask of everything in our life:• Is this serving me or not serving me?• What is keeping me from being fully present with God?• Am I walking with negation?• How can I feast on the ideas that make me clean and clear?• What distracts me from being fully present?A closer walk with thee means we give up what no longer is serving us to stay present to God. We must move into the“I-Thou” relationship with others rather than the “I-It” relationship.Rev. Michael Beckwith says we must become spiritually mal-adjusted (according the world view)—remembering that God is our true source and not “buying into the spell” of lack and limitation. We either live from personality or from character. Character is based in God, birthed of the Divine, personality is based in the world with an outer focus. Our inner work is to let our soul character express—to be in the world but not of it.Questions to ponder:1. Ask yourself these questions about everything in your life:Is this serving me or not serving me?What is keeping me from being fully present with God?Am I walking with negation? How can I feast on the ideas that make me clean and clear? What distracts me from being fully present?
