In the Spring, Wood Frogs thaw out from their cryogenic state and emerge from underground burrows to begin the mad rush to find a mate. A shallow vernal pool situated deep in the woods near Quashnet River on Cape Cod is shared by the Wood Frogs with Salamanders as an egg depository. Globs of egg masses incubate in the temporary aquatic habitat where they hatch and mature in relative safety. As the pool dries up, these adolescent amphibian wood frogs and salamanders make the switch from water to land in dramatic fashion. Brendan Annett and Erin Shields of Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve monitor the Wood Frog and Salamander populations from year to year. This feed runs 4 minutes.
