In a country where there are no Norman castles or Greek temples to worry about, we should be good at preserving our modern architectural heritage. But are we? This week, we talk to a couple of UK experts about lessons that can be learnt from the British experience of preserving the architectural legacy of Modernism, and making it public.
The underground house
Eight years ago in the Victorian town of Ballarat, Samantha McIntosh began renovating a run down 1850s mansion. Her aim was to restore the property to its original Victorian architectural drawings and sell it in eight years. But this is more than just a story about architraves and window fittings. After many years of restoring and renovating various properties, Samantha realised that THIS house had layers of history waiting to be discovered ... including the surprise of an underground house.
Trends and Products: Victoria the design capital
Today a look at a recent report published by Design Victoria. Called Five Years On, Victoria´s Design sector 2003-2008, the report has some very interesting research figures, including this one. Did you know that the total expenditure on design by Victorian businesses in 2008 was $7 billion? And most of that money was spent on Victorian based designers. The report highlights that businesses that use design enjoy higher rates of profit growth.

Bugatti—a name that conjures up a lot of images and probably the first ones that come to mind are those of their beautiful cars. Out of the reach of all but the very rich, these fabulous cars have endured over the last century and remain today as the icon they always were.
