A New Look at Christmas: The Journey Begins November 30, 2008Rev. David AlexanderOn this first day of Advent, we start a series based on the idea that all of us are longing for what is real. This longing is universal, a thread that runs through all faith traditions. When one person has an awakening, we create story and tradition around that person, in hopes that we, too, will have an awakening. This awakening happened for Jesus and so the story of his birth was created to coincide with his experience as an adult. The early writers of the New Testament had to justify Jesus’ life and teachings, therefore, stories about his birth were created to match stories in Jewish history (the Torah/Old Testament).Jesus was an universal archetype representing our own soul’s desire for freedom—a desire that we all share. Our soul’s journey begins during Advent with the opportunity to step into the symbology that will help us grow spiritually. Advent is an adventure and the adventure starts with the HOPE that we will one day be at peace. The Old Testament tells of the people of Judea who were under the rule of others—captives. They were looking for a savior to take them out of bondage into freedom. Our own journey begins with hope, the hope that we will be at peace as well. These are questions to ask ourselves:• Where have I been under bondage?• Where have I been warring with myself?• Where have I been missing peace?•These are all good questions to ask ourselves as we begin the journey of awakening the Christ within ourselves.
