For almost a century, now, Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" has cast its woodsy aura over young people's definitions of poetry. Often, students who take my introductory writing course struggle to connect with contemporary voices, and express a longing for good old fashioned poetry by Robert Frost. When this happens, I like to read Frost's great essay, "The Figure a Poem Makes." It can help young poets build a bridge from nostalgia for a simplicity that never existed to a more realistic sense of what it means to be a poet.
