DisabilityNation|Harkin Continues to Champion Disability Rights Episode
DN67: On July 26th the disability community celebrated the 18th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. While there were a number of political figures from both the Republican and Democratic parties who lent their support to the efforts to pass the ADA, perhaps the greatest champion of disability legislation has been Senator Tom harkin of Iowa. Senator Harkin has worked tirelessly to move various disability legislation through the House and Senate including the ADA, the Community Choice Act and others.
As part of the National Forum on Disability Issues held last month, Senator Harkin spoke on behalf of 2008 presidential candidate Barak Obama. While Harkin offered a number of reasons why the disability community should support the candidacy of Senator Obama, he also highlighted the current state of disability legislation in Congress and his past efforts to implement positive changes that have benefited the disability community. Since this presentation, Senator Harkin and a number of co-sponsors have introduced legislation in the Senate that will result in restoring the intent of Congress when it passed the ADA back in 1990.
