Hamelin is renowned for his exploration of unfamiliar piano repertoire and has performed all over the world. The Canadian Marc-André Hamelin began his piano studies at the age of five and was just nine years old when he won the top prize in a Canadian music competition.
His father, a pharmacist by trade who was also a pianist, introduced him to the works of Alkan, Godowsky and Sorabji when he was still young.
Hamelin studied at the in Montréal and then at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His very original blend of musicianship and virtuosity has earned him legendary status as a pianist. He is renowned for his exploration of unfamiliar piano repertoire and has performed, as soloist and with orchestras all over the world.
Alongside his concert performances Marc-André Hamelin has made an extensive variety recordings and been the recipient of many international awards, most recently, the 2008 Juno Award for Classical Album of the Year for his recording of the Alkan Concerto for Solo Piano.In this week’s Inspired Minds Marc-André Hamelin speaks to Breandáin O’Shea about his desire to present lesser-known piano repertoire, his composing and life as one of the world’s most renowned concert pianists.
