Willingdon Church Sermons|There’s Always More than Meets the Eye Episode
First impressions can be misleading. Our misperceptions based on a first impression can run in two different directions. Sometimes we meet a person and are immediately impressed, but later discover that they weren’t who we thought they were. At other times our initial encounter with a person might be underwhelming, but as time goes on we realize that there is more than meets the eye. The story of David’s selection as Israel’s King reminds us that while we have a tendency to see things incorrectly at times, God always sees things with perfect clarity.
1. We know what we want; God knows what we need
We are often confused by our limited perspective
God always sees the big picture
2. We evaluate based on image; God evaluates based on substance
· We are easily deceived by appearances
· God sees the condition of our heart
3. We concentrate on reputation; God concentrates on character
· We are sometimes fooled by popular opinion
· God’s opinion is the only one that counts
4. We look for a star; God looks for a servant
· We have a tendency to overlook that which is truly significant
· God consistently chooses those who are of no account
