The WholeLife Pages LIVE!|Every Generation Needs a New Revolution
Episode
No one ever said it would be easy, but then again, no one ever thought wed live this long. No one ever thought there would be four, five, and sometimes six generations in the same office, in the same household, in the same world. Put them all in a room together and what you get is often either comical or chaotic. Its also a matter of survival. First impressions, the ability to communicate, understand and accept those both older and younger than ourselves can be a challenge at best, often resulting in loss of talent, resentments, and yes, even chaos.
During this show Linda Thompson, Life Path Solutions, author of Every Generation Needs a New Revolution is going to talk about who these generations are, what are their
defining characteristics, and what factors help to create who we are. Perhaps more importantly, we will talk about the 20th Century decade by decade because as we all know, we have a spill-over effect from generation to generation. For example, Bob Dylan, Abbe Hoffman and Jane Fonda are often associated with the counter culture movement, but would it surprise you to learn that all three were born between 1930 and 1941?
The world is changing and we need to know how to navigate this twisted maze weve created. If you are a team captain, corporate manager, leader of an organization, or if you are just seeking to understand those you interact with on a daily basis, Every Generation Needs a New Revolution will help you do just that.
Every generation has their own values and perspectives; their own heroes and villains. By understanding what those core beliefs are, communication and understanding will increase ten-fold. We will talk about communication methods, the acceptable and the unacceptable, and how to interact with each. But perhaps most important, how first impressions and perceptions can often result in lost opportunity.
As a rebel-rousing Boomer who never really grew up, Linda Thompson relates to the Gen-Ys and Millennials in ways their parents may never truly understand. The younger generations need to be given a chance, but we need to accept it will never again be business as usual. What worked 30, 20 and yes, even 10 years ago wont work today. Why? Because these kids came out of the womb multitasking. They are more technically literate than we ever thought of being. They are intelligent, diligent and socially conscious. But, they will not work in a cubicle from 8 to 5 and be happy with a paycheck at the end of the week. Helping people to recognize and understand this has become Linda's #1 passion in life.
On the other side of the coin, however, just because someone is older, has gray hair, wears glasses and a hearing aid doesnt mean he or she is ready to be set aside. They are still very interested in staying both mentally and physically in the thick of things; they are full of life and have a desire to share. How much could we learn from our elders if we just took the time to listen?
With over twenty years in the corporate world, and ten as an entrepreneur, Linda has run the gamut from being the new kid on the block to one of the almost-elders. Her career in marketing taught her that its not what you say, but how you say it and its never the same when crossing generational boundaries.
As a former family consultant Linda has seen the results of miscommunication between parents and their adult children, particularly when it comes to elder care and end-of-life discussions. Linda has many friends and business associates that cross generational boundaries and has made a point to ask questions, glean information, and compile it into books, articles, workshops and presentations that will help her audience better understand the world in which they live. She treats the world as her own personal focus group.
