Traditional Chinese Medicine How and Why it Works… Born in Hong Kong, Daniel K. Wong, was an apprentice to Dr. Chan Yau Kei from 1974 to 1986, which earned him membership in the Hong Kong Chinese Herbalists Assn. From 1985 – 1995, Daniel had his own Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practice in Hong Kong. In 1997 he moved his holistic practice to Scottsdale and founded the Apricot House of Herbs. Since 1999, Daniel has held licensure as a Diplomate in Chinese Herbology with the NCCAOM (National Commission for Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine). In his practice, Daniel imports over 700 medicinal herbs, from which he formulates healing remedies for a multitude of ailments. These herbs are usually boiled in water to drink as a “Tea”. The theory behind this is to achieve the internal balance and inner harmony of the body. Oriental herbal medicine dates back about 4,000 years. The first step in diagnosis is Observation which involves observing an individual’s general appearance, facial color, physical secretions/excretions, and assessing the tongue by its color, coating, shape and movement. Secondly is Listening to the patient’s voice and respiration. The third step involves asking many Questions about symptoms they feel or may have overlooked. The fourth step is the most important- the Herbologist puts three fingers on three positions of each wrist to feel the pulses of the organs. The formula is then based on the findings of these four steps. Thus, the formula is preventative as well as curative herbal medicine. It is customized for each patient’s needs. The exactitude of which herbs work together for a specific healing function is crucial. These diagnostics and the prescription are Daniel Wong’s forte.
