It is sponsored by the Human Rights Institute at Georgetown Law and the Center for American Progress. Theannual Samuel Dash Conference on Human Rights was established by SamuelDashs family and friends, Georgetown Law alumni and the law firm ofCozen OConnor to honor Dashs contributions to international humanrights and domestic civil rights. Dash,who joined the Georgetown Law faculty in 1965, and was on the board ofthe International League of Human Rights, traversed the globe inpursuit of justice. He led a human rights mission to Northern Irelandto investigate the 1972 "Bloody Sunday" incident, and traveled to theSoviet Union and Chile. In 1985, he was the first American to visitNelson Mandela in prison and became involved in mediation efforts thateventually led to Mandela's release. Dashalso served as chief counsel of the Senate Watergate Committeesinvestigation into the Nixon administrations involvement in theDemocratic National Committee break-in, which ultimately led toPresident Nixons resignation. Dash died in 2004.
