The museum was stablished in 1948, and was intended to help the police in their study of crime and criminals. In 1951, the film talent Orson Wells started a radio program for the BBC, which was named The Black Museum. Each week, Wells featured an item from the museum and produced a dramatization of the story surrounding the object to the macabre delight of audiences.
