Time to think|Time To Think - November 21, 2007 - Retired or rewired? Episode
I remember writing an article some time ago entitled ‘Don’t dare retire’. In that article I told the story of Dr. Maxwell Maltz, whom I had the distinct pleasure of working with some years ago. Incidentally, Dr. Maltz was one of the world’s foremost Plastic Surgeons, and he was the Author of the million selling book ‘Psycho-Cybernetics’, which is the definitive book on self-image psychology. At the time of my association with Dr. Maltz he was both world famous, and extremely well off financially. However, he was always extremely busy giving lectures all over the world, despite the fact that he was in his late sixties.
Apparently, as he relayed the story to me one day, his next door neighbor asked him why he hadn’t retired as he was indeed rich and famous. Dr. Maltz simply replied by saying in all of his wisdom “You can’t retire from life”. Oh how true that is.
The State of Florida in particular is full of people, who have worked real hard all of their life up north in places like New York, Chicago, Pittsburg and Boston. They finally retire to Florida where they buy a nice home, a set of golf clubs and a Cadillac. Now, the sad thing is, that an awful lot of them are dead in a relatively short period of time after retiring. Why is this, do you suppose?
In my estimation it’s simply because they have absolutely nothing constructive to do, other than play golf, and drink far too much alcohol out of sheer boredom. Everyone regardless of age needs to have a very definite purpose in life, they need to have a reason to get up in the morning. Everyone needs to wake up each day feeling genuinely excited at what they intend to accomplish during the day. So MY Friend, instead of becoming ‘Retired’ you really need to be ‘Rewired’ for future success.
One of the greatest definitions of ‘Success’ which I learnt from my mentor Earl Nightingale goes like this “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal”. So, it therefore logically follows, that in order to be successful a person must AT ALL TIMES have a series of goals and objectives, which they are progressively working towards. It is because whet some people finally retire from their regular form of work, and then don’t set any meaningful goals, that they stagnate and eventually die prematurely.
So My Friend, in conclusion, when you retire from whatever it is that you presently do for a living, you need to make sure that you get ‘Rewired’ for future success, by simply setting a series of meaningful goals for yourself. You need to have a very definite purpose for living, otherwise, take it from me, you’ll in all probability die prematurely.
The secret of living a long, and indeed meaningful life which you really enjoy, is to remain mentally, physically, and spiritually active right up to the end.
THINK ABOUT IT!
