Christmas is usually a consuming time – we are consumed by the chaos of the mall, the flurry of holiday activities, the expectations of others. As our debt rises and our patience shrinks, we’re ready for a different kind of December. Enter Advent – the church calendar season that is as “un-holiday” as it gets. For four weeks, we are asked to slow down instead of dashing to and fro, to wait instead of grabbing the last deal, to hope for something real and far more lasting than getting the latest gadget, to give life instead of plastic.
