In this podcast, Dr. Hamlin compares clinical depression to a wild beast that can be tamed. Each episode considers a different aspect of taming the wild beast of clinical depression. He reveals many of the secrets of depression treatment that many psychologists have seen work well right before their eyes. Some of these secrets involve a better understanding how clinical depression (also called Major DepressiveDisorder) differs from feeling sad or down. He also reveals some of the keys to getting perspective about depression medication and anxiety medication. His approach means that many people can start immediately dealing with depression whether or not they go to therapy. Men and women suffering from clinical depression can begin to understand key concepts that provide an inkling of hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Dr. Hamlin believes that if the wild beast of clinical depression is to be tamed, people need to understand key principles about stress relief, anger management, and stress anxiety treatment. People suffering from clinical depression are often confronted with two painful dilemmas long before they think of depression treatment, depression medicine, or steps to stress reduction. First, they have a need to understand what clinical depression really is. On the one hand they would benefit from reading a book on depression. On the other hand, clinical depression has hurt their ability to concentrate and read. Consequently, they are in a Catch-22 dilemma: just at the time in their life when reading would benefit them, they find reading the most difficult! Dr. Hamlin addresses this dilemma by providing regular podcast episodes that people can listen to before they have recovered their concentration. Furthermore, they can listen to the episodes repeatedly to enhance their learning experience. [ The second painful Catch-22 has to do with the role of family and friends trying to help someone who is locked in a clinical depression. Women and men mauled by the beast of a major depression need the support of friends or family. On the one hand they need people to help encourage them and offset the strength of the beast to drag them away from being engaged with life. On the other hand, one of the cardinal symptoms of clinical depression is social withdrawal. Consequently, just when social support is most needed people suffering from clinical depression want to be alone partly because well-meaning people don’t know how to help. Caring family and friends often don’t know how to give support without either making matters worse or becoming frustrated themselves. Dr. Hamlin offers this podcast as a tool that allows people suffering from clinical depression to have a free resource that they can pass on orrecommend to those who wish to be of support to them. A depressed man or woman can give the audio file or a link to a friend or family member and say, “Here, listen to this and you will see how to help instead of giving advice… or avoiding me.” Dr. Hamlin does not believe that education about depression is a substitute for effective depression treatment or depression medication. But he recognizes that thousands of people suffer from major depressive disorder and may never set foot in a therapist’s office for various reasons. Thus, this podcast allows the listener another avenue to gain important facts about depression.
