How humane are "humane" meat, dairy, and eggs?

I have yet to meet a non-vegetarian who didn't care about the treatment of animals raised and killedfor human consumption, and I have yet to meet a non-vegetarian who didn't declare that they're eating "humanelyraised" meat, dairy, and eggs. When you factor in the breeding, transporting, and slaughter, is it possible tohave "humane" animal products?...

The practice of eating animals is a culturally ingrained habit. If you're in the U.S., you might dineon pigs, cattle, and chickens; if you're in Mexico, you might feast on goats; if you're in parts of Asia, youmight devour dogs and cats.
