TYT in Fast Company

Our local rebels The Young Turks and Cenk Uygur are profiled in December's issue of Fast Company. See if you recognize the author. Go see. From the article: Uygur doesn't look like a rebel, but there is something revolutionary going on here. Roughly 450,000 people watch The Young Turks on YouTube alone; thousands more in the precious 18-to-35 demo listen on Sirius Satellite Radio and through the TYT Web site, making it competitive with, say, MSNBC's Morning Joe (382,000 viewers a day in Septem...

LAT to Staff: Don't Post Anything on FB That Would Embarrass Us

We would never accuse the Los Angeles Times of being early adopters. LA Biz Journal reports: "Integrity is our most important commodity: Avoid writing or posting anything that would embarrass The Times or compromise your ability to do your job," the committee stated. Most interesting, the committee stated that employees should "assume that your professional life and your personal life will merge online regardless of your care in separating them." Playboy's Outsourcing Strategy

Playboy Enterprises Inc. has struck a deal to outsource most of the struggling magazine's operations to Florida-based publisher American Media Inc. Chief executive officer Scott Flanders told the Wall Street Journal that the five-year deal "would help return the magazine to profitability by the end of 2011." That's all well and good unless you happen to work at the magazine. The deal means many layoffs for Playboy employees. Of course, Hugh Hefner isn't going anywhere. Editorial is the one ...

Distraught Angeleno Finds Out His Dad is Charles Manson

So as you sit around the holiday table this week, looking at those spooky weirdos you call family, wondering if being associated with them makes you look bad, marveling how your knuckles don't seem to be dragging on the floor like the rest of them, think of poor self-described DJ, Matthew Roberts who found out it was Charles Manson who raped his mother 40 years ago. Here's the pic of Roberts. Roberts tells The Sun: He says: "I didn't want to believe it. I was frightened and angry. It's like fi...

Drex Heikes Responds to Neon Tommy Piece

We asked LA Weekly's new editor Drex Heikes what was true in the Neon Tommy profile. Are they going to be hiring more reporters? What is the future of the paper? "The kid who wrote it was first rate. I wish it had been more about the paper and less about yours truly. I asked him several times to focus on the paper because I could tell he was going all messiah, which is utterly misguided," Heikes tells FBLA. Noting, "The websites advisors are both former Weekly employees. I wonder what happened...

Twitter Plans To Make Money Soon

Yes, Twitter is huge. Yes, in the case of the Iran election, it has changed history. Yes it's close to icon status. But it has yet to turn a profit. That should all end soon according to Bloomberg.com: Twitter plans to start the ad business in early 2010, Chief Operating Officer Dick Costolo said today at a conference in San Francisco. The current revenue comes from companies paying to use Twitter's data, such as Microsoft Corp. displaying Twitter updates in its search results. Twitter -- a fr...

LA Weekly's 'New Guard' Slams LA Weekly's 'Old Guard'

Last Friday, in response to an article by student-run Neon Tommy, the LA Weekly ran a post on its daily blog harshly critical of the paper prior to it's acquisition in 2006 by the owners of the New Times chain (now Village Voice Media). The author of the post, Dennis Romero, all but declared that a new golden era has arrived at the paper, rescuing readers from what they gladly picked up for nearly three decades. It's a strangely schizophrenic and defensive piece of propaganda, and probably not e...
