Pop Culture Thursday "My Name Is Earl" and MythBusters

I hope this will be an entertaining Pop Culture Thursday double-header this week. It's funny how that happens sometimes; some weeks there is nothing and now there are two in one day, just out of synchronicity. First, I netflixed the second season of My Name Is Earl because I have come to really like it instead of thinking of it as "that redneck show on before The Office". It's that, of course, but it is a lot more too, and has recently supplied me with a lot of heart and real laugh-out-loud ...

In Their Own Words; Reflecting on 25 Years Part II

DN72: In May of 2008 Members of ADAPT celebrated 25 years of advocacy and civil disobedience that has brought awareness to the fact that thousands of people with disabilities are trapped in nursing homes, unable to secure services that would allow them to live independently in the community. As part of that celebration, a special exhibit was published that features photos and narratives, both in written and audio format, providing accounts of the 50 actions that have been held over the organiza...

NFB/Target Settlement Falls Short

Last week it was reported that the National Federation of the Blind, NFB, had reached a settlement in its suit against Target Stores Inc. THe case has been going on for a few years now and, while the end result promises blind people greater access to Target's web site, the longer term impact on access to other sites in cyber space remains cloudy at best. And, beyond questions about how this settlement will improve access to the web, one only needs to follow the money and they will arrive at eve...

New Column-- Pop Culture Thursday

Pop Culture Thursday Today I'm catching up with one of my favorite TV shows: House, MD. I missed a lot of episodes last year, due to a scheduling conflict so my loss has turned into DisabilityNation's gain, hopefully. The reality-show type competition that House has his team of "ducklings" on as Season 4 opens is both a send-up of unscripted reality TV and a meta response to the writers' strike that foreshortened the 2007 viewing season. Some people hated the storyline, but I found it in kee...

We're Not Cash Cows

DN70: Last week, members of ADAPT in the Philadelphia area joined together to protest the ongoing institutionalization of people with disabilities in a city owned nursing home. Advocates say the home offers deplorable living conditions and that those living in the facility are subject to a poor quality of life. On Monday, August 18th members of ADAPT began their round-the-clock vigil outside of the facility. They promised to continue the protest until Mayor Nutter made a commitment to establish...

DN69: Many baseball fans have heard their favorite radio or television announcers calls of "Seeing Eye Singles" - those hits where the ball somehow has eyes and slips past the infielders. Brian Charlson of Watertown and Rick Morin of Waltham, MA are taking the expression "Seeing Eye Single" literally. Charlson and Morin will depart August 22, 2008 on an 8 days, 8 games, 6 ballparks, and 5 cities tour of Major League Baseball Clubs in the Northeast. Battle Over Accessible Currency Entering Next Phase

DN68: The battle within the blind community over the accessibility of United States currency moved in to high gear with a decision in favor of the American Council of the Blind back in November 2006. At that time the court ruled that the Department of the Treasury was in violation of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act because currency was not accessible to blind people. However, within a month of that verdict the United States Department of the Treasury appealed the decision with the full ba...

Why PWD Should Watch "Flipping Out"

I don't know if Jeff Lewisthinks of his OCD as a disability. I think, if I were in his place, I might, as it affects everything about his life, from the way he eats lunch, to fueling his single-minded obsession with making his flipped properties perfect. It's not like Lewis could really pass as a role model, or a crip crusader of any stripe. He indulges in too many petty and petulant outbursts on his hapless staff for that. I swear, however, that it's not just schadenfreude that makes me watc...
