Good News and Conspiracies

Leo discusses a host of important items: Honda reduces waste to ZERO in its plants, true costs for fossil fuels are finally being calculated, and Cheney is still showing his astonishing chutzpah.  Listener Clint is insulted when Leo labels the sensationalist banners on Alex Jones' website what they are: unproductive conspiracy theories (or worse)....

Michael Mendenhall

We got word that Michael Mendenhall, who worked on New Capital Show, was killed by a drunk driver, and John Daido Loori, one of the world's great Zen teachers passed away.  Leo reflects on their lives, and then turns his attention to the sordid story of how an ex deputy mayor of LA could take a seat on the board of one of the largest pension funds in the world, and then turn that gig into a $50 million payment.  This should be a national scandal, but it doesn't even seem...

Shadow Projections

A reader's comments from Andrew Sullivan's blog The Daily Dose strike a chord with listeners: Obama is now the recipient of Jungian shadow projections by the right?  For Leo, it's all about projects, and as the President cancels useless projects in favor of useful projects, the right cannot bear the truth: their projects suck.  Mary Travers of Peter, Paul, & Mary fame passes on, but not before she spends a lifetime of showing how to advocate your views passionately, effectively, an...

Lie to me

After a fantastic speech to the children of our Nation (even Republicans agreed so), the President took his momentum to the Congress in an effort to clarify his vision of health care reform, shore up some votes, and put the debate back on a civil trajectory.  As usual, however, the Republicans doubled down on lunacy and disrespect of the office by having one of their members (presumably not coerced) shout down the President by calling him a liar.  Leo hopes and expects t...

Indoctri-Nation

Leo tackles the Right Wing's latest buffoonery in their effort to keep kids home from school to avoid watching the President's address to, and therefore indoctrination of, our children.  How can you ever repair a child's view of the President after teaching them to show such disrespect for our elected leader?  And as the Right Wing continues to fail our children so does Texas, who recently decided to eliminate Sex Education in the class.  Though elimi...

Reluctant Shoppers

The Wall Street Journal claims that "reluctant shoppers" are holding back the United States economy because they refuse to unholster their wallets and spend, spend, spend like it was, well, like it was yesterday!  Leo disagrees: the only thing holding back the economy is what has always held back the economy - bad investments being chosen over good ones....

Healthcare Reform

Leo finally decides to address healthcare reform head-on, as the government does the same thing.  Leo finds similarities in the failure of private banking intermediaries to do their jobs and the failure of private healthcare intermediaries to do their jobs.  If the intermediaries can't successfully intermediate at a national level and achieve their stated purpose, why are they entitled to support?  In the new economy, Leo notes a new report from McKinsey & Company that fi...

Seats at the Table

New Capital Show debuts at its new time, 3pm CST Thursdays, catch it live at www.kpft.org or podcast here.  Lots of people shouting for a seat at the table to have a voice in how new capital will be raised and how it will be allocated.  Funny, these are the very same people who caused the gigantic, and now catastrophic, shift in capital raising and allocation over the past few decades.  All countries need a healthy balance between private and public projects, and capital is raised...

Recycling Update

Harry Hayes, Director of Houston Solid Waste, joins us by phone to talk about progress with the new single stream pilot program.  Director Hayes says it's a clear success, already in 10,000 households, with plans to reach an additional 50,000 of Houston's 375,000 households.  But between the lines, it sounds like the program is struggling to find funding.  Why is recycling expected to earn its keep?  No other municipal program is....

Hunger In America

Sasha Abramsky visits to discuss his new book Breadline USA and highlight the growing number of working poor who are struggling to put food on their tables.  Leo notes that an investment banker friend of his believes that "everyone benefited" from the Reagan revolution, but Sasha begs to differ.  While the legislative agenda on global emissions, health, and others has a better chance now, it will have setbacks, as it's having right now.  Leo also recommends Niall Ferguson's new do...

Progress in the Storm

Unemployment ratchets sharply higher in May, and critical legislation continues to get watered down in Congress by politicians on the take.  Florida shuts down summer school for lack of funding - what a country!  Right wingers grow more shrill the more they are opposed.  Still, progress is occurring as the nation goes through a big readjustment.  Even suburban developers are starting to put in organic farms as their centerpiece.  Take a break and a trip and enjoy yo...

Crowding Out

Leo discusses the use of vast amounts of capital for, at best, highly questionable projects like more resorts in the Nevada desert and stadiums on the North Texas plain.  With huge deficits facing the US and a constrained capital account, why did we make the choices that we did over the past decades?  One thing is for sure, and that is it won't be easy to undo overnight....

Silent Mentors

As the economy tumbles itself about, Leo spots an interesting article in the Wall Street Journal that may prove to be the underlining solution for which we are so desperately searching.  The article speaks of Doctors in Taiwan who deeply understand the gift of Cadavers for medical research and pass this on to the next generation of students.  Leo contemplates that if you have a society that cares deeply about health, you get a good health insurance system.  If we desire a society...
