Episode 10: Australia

At long last, a new episode....Everybody knows about Nick Cave and the Birthday Party coming from Australia--but what other bands came out around that time, and just after? Here in the US, we heard more about Australia at the end of the 80's with the Paisley Underground / New Psych sound ( Guano Bats, Lime Spiders, --) coming from Down Under. Australia had a TON of punk and post punk bands that we only heard a few of in the US-( like Midnight Oil and Shriekback). Check out the book Inner City So...

Japanese Postpunk

Sorry to have taken so long with a new episode. This one features some known bands like YMO and Plastics, and some not so known ones like The Willard, Gille Love's, Sekima II, Hlmens and Yapoos. There are videos of these goups on Youtube, so you should check them out. There are many groups like P-Model ( a direct influnece on Polysics), Sandi and the Sunsets, Sheena and the Rockets and many others that I didn't have room to include. Japanese 80's music is hard to find in the US, but it is w...

FEMALE POWER- BE PROUD, BE LOUD, BE HEARD

I have a great affection for female vocals, so here is a celebration of some of the best and rarest from the early Postpunk era. In fact I have so many groups to choose from, that this is part one of 2--This part features Toyah WIlcox, ultra rare songs from Dolly Mixture, obscure music from Pauline Murray and the Invisible Girls, Danielle Dax, The Slits, and rarely heard music by Bjork's early band KUKL....

Who's on First?: The Originators

One band does not a movement make. These groups were very different from each other, but going in the same direction--forward. Members of many of these bands were in Punk groups, but found the format limiting, or in some way no longer relevant. This episode has songs from Magazine, (perhaps the very first Postpunk band), Public Image Limited (without doubt in the first 2), The Birthday Party ( in some ways punk, but going beyond), Killing Joke ( a major in fluence on Industrial, Goth and Metal),...

Futurist, New Romantic, Electronic

This special episode spotlights the early electronic groups. The Human League are the undoubted early godfathers of Futurism ( along with The Normal), and these 2 songs come from their first 2 albums. Also in this show are Visage, the greatest of the New Romantics, Japan the smoothest of them all, the dark Minny Pops, early Simple Minds instrumentals, and Ultravox (one of the most important and influential)....

POSTPUNK BASICS 2: Atmosphere

This may be my best / favorite show yet. It has all of the traits of various shades of Postpunk in one show. The theme may or may not refer to the Joy Division song ( though no JD in this episode). Instead you will find rare jems like Department S, named for a TV spy show, The Raincoats, from their CD Oddyshape, and Crispy Ambulance, Blue Orchids, and Comsat Angels. Listen to the variety of guitar sounds, and then ask yourself what makes a song postpunk? Let me know what you think....
