"It's That Time Again" – Week of May 19, 2008

Working on the Interstate is a lot like painting the Golden Gate Bridge: get to one end and head back the other direction. The work is never done. This week in Van Zandt County, two separate projects are scheduled to kick off this week on I-20, including one to extend the median barrier west from SH 64 to the Kaufman County Line, and the other to begin pavement rehabilitation between SH 19 and SH 64. Hey, Buddy, Need A Ride? – Week of May 5, 2008

As gasoline prices continue to reach all-time highs, many of us are reevaluating our finances, especially as they relate to our driving habits. Some of us are considering carpooling, and combining several errands into one trip. Still others are using public transit options more and more frequently. That's music to our ears at TxDOT, where we play a big role in making sure that public transit through agencies such as the East Texas Council of Governments, or ETCOG, keeps rolling. To find out more...

As I've said in recent episodes, when the weather warms up, so does our work schedule, and the one big project that's been on hold since last year is back under way this week. In Tyler, construction crews are scheduled to return this week to work on the intersection of SH 110 and SE Loop 323, also known as Troup and the Loop, to pick up where the project left off last fall. "Wet, Dry, and Everything In Between" – Week of April 14, 2008

At TxDOT, we spend a lot of time and money trying to keep water out of our roadways. We use operations like edge seal, seal coat, and hot mixing to waterproof a roadway's surface, which will help prolong the life of the pavement. When I started this podcast program two years ago, we were in the middle of a multi-year drought. When I conducted the following interview with Mike Reagan, the Tyler District's Maintenance Superintendent, it was one of my first for the podcast. Since it's been raining ...

"Bottleneck in Bullard" – Week of April 7, 2008

Before taking a look at the seal coat and Mill and inlay operations scheduled for this week, I wanted to take a minute to talk about the overpass construction on US 69 at FM 344 in Bullard. In Bullard, Construction crews have reduced US 69 to one lane in each direction around the FM 344 intersection so they can begin construction on temporary lanes for traffic during the construction of the overpass at that intersection. Construction of the temporary lanes will take approximately two weeks, weat...

"Clarifying The Funding Options" – Week of March 17, 2008

In the process of preparing to speak on TxDOT's funding shortages, I've been asked repeatedly about what the funding options are, and there are several. Each option comes with its own pros and cons. By sharing my notes with you, I'm not attempting to influence anyone's opinions, I simply want you to know what I know to be fact. Also, please keep in mind that the Texas Legislature will have to approve any changes in the way TxDOT is currently funded before those changes can be implemented. So, fr...

"Texas: Managing a Transportation Portfolio" – Week of March 10, 2008

What is transportation? For most of us, it's getting ourselves efficiently where we need to go, and for most of us, that means highways. Lots of highways. But perspectives on transportation vary from place to place, and from need to need. Depending on what you're trying to move, transportation can also be about aviation, rail, and public transit. In order to keep large economies moving, all forms of transportation must work together to share the load, especially as funding for highways across ...

Most motorists are familiar with TxDOT's maintenance forces and see them from time to time repairing the highways. Less obvious are the district's sign technicians, who often make their rounds by themselves, repairing and replacing damaged signs along the highways. Inevitably, with all that driving, the sign men drive up on some unusual situations, including wrecks, loose cattle and downed trees and power lines. But some days are even stranger than others. For more on his most unusual day, I spo...

"Sealing An Old Jacksonville Profile" – Week of February 25, 2008

By now, if you've been listening to this podcast for any length of time, you've heard me talking about seal coat. That's a summertime surface application where we put down sticky asphalt and cover it with rock in the hopes of sealing water out of a road's base. But in the winter, seal coat isn't practical because the asphalt can contract in cold temperatures and let loose the rocks it was supposed to be sticking down. Instead, we perform what's called fog seal. Fog seal is a similar process to s...

"Seeing the Bigger Funding Picture" – Week of February 18, 2008

While last week's hearing in front of the state Senate Finance Committee wasn't the most comfortable way for TxDOT's administration to spend an afternoon, the hearing did serve to narrow the conversation about transportation and future funding for transportation. At issue at one point was TxDOT's "lost billion dollars," which was the result of a mathematical error in a fiscal-year projection. In other words, we counted one of our eggs twice. The feel of the hearing was one of two friends disagre...
