Mark Rushton Podcast #19 - March 2007 - Passed

One lengthy piece that drifts along, changing ever so slightly, before trailing off. The title gives away the subject matter. It's not really meant to be listened to at top volume. To find out more about Mark's other podcasts, free MP3s, CD, and digital downloads, visit markrushton.com...

Mark Rushton Podcast #18 - Early February

Like January's podcast, here's three more pieces of brand-new ambient and electronica music all mixed together. The initial 5 minutes is totally gorgeous; like a mutant Harold Budd remix floating in and out amongst field recordings, bits of electronica, and a backing that drifts slightly in and out of time. The second part features a simple piano arpeggio, soft bass, and electronic touches for almost 3 minutes.  The third piece is more industrial in nature with field recordings and shortwave s...

Mark Rushton Podcast #13 - Brine

Bass player Jon Harnish and I met up at the Ambient Matyk Cafe in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Saturday, June 10th. We had planned to do improvisational ambient soundscaping in public in Iowa City, but it had been raining all day and the temps were about 50 degrees with 20 mph winds, unseasonably cool for mid-June, so we thought it would be better to play indoors.Jon and I created a lot of great music from this session. Here's a track based on a piece of music I created called "Brine" - this is a live...

Mark Rushton Podcast #17 - Three New Pieces

In this podcast, I have three new pieces of ambient/electronica music that are mixed together with no talking by me. It's all music. The first two are relatively shorter pieces built on arpeggios, multiple delays, and aftertouch. They are both fully improvised one-takes that have been edited for length. The second piece has a much grander sound than the first. The third piece is much longer, almost 9 minutes in length. It's built upon numerous layered and edited improvisations. It's more of a...

Mark Rushton Podcast #14 - Hum, Metrics, and Rhythm

First is a remix of The Hum Of Antique Machines that runs about 6 1/2 minutes. It's a drone-based thing with fuzz and flutter coming in and out. Jon and I recorded it outdoors, so you can hear the birds singing in the background. The original studio version is the first track my latest album, Hum And Drift. After that is a short piece, just under 3 minutes, which is based on shortwave loops and some other rhythm and synth loops used in my remix of Psychometrics, the recording of which appears i...

Mark Rushton Podcast #10 - September Sky, Parts 1 And 2

Bass player Jon Harnish and I did live soundscaping in Iowa City in September of 2005. It was quite a good session and we got a lot of material. I featured a track from one of these sessions in Podcast #6, which came out in early October of 2005. The first track, what I'm calling "September Sky, Part 1", is very stark with long, drawn-out synth drones and sustained bass. The birds you'll hear were not live, but multi-tracked field recordings done by me. It's a little over 6 minutes long. The s...

Mark Rushton Podcast #9 - What Does An Iowa Winter Sound Like? (ambient)

"What Does An Iowa Winter Sound Like?" by Mark Rushton - A reporter from a local paper asked me via email about the possibility of writing a story on the music and spotlighting this podcast. It sort of morphed into a theme that the reporter came up with, which was: "What Does An Iowa Winter Sound Like?" During the month of December in 2005, winter has been relentless in Iowa. We've received nearly a foot of snow and dealt with temperatures as low as -19. I commute daily to from my home in C...

Mark Rushton Podcast #8 - Ambient Matyk and Iowa City Recordings From November 2005

Today I have four different pieces of music. The first is an edit of an rhythmic ambient piece called "Signed Away" - a piece I did with bass player Jon Harnish and singer Duke Lancaster at the Ambient Matyk on November 19, 2005. The second piece is one that that Jon and I created in Iowa City on Sunday, November 13th, 2005, in the mini stage area of the Pedestrian Mall, right outside the Sheraton Hotel. Jon and I got a permit from the City of Iowa City and played for a couple of hours until ...
